RALEIGH – Dorothy Jones of Durham tried her luck with a $10 scratch-off ticket and ended up winning a $1 million prize.
Jones’ good luck occurred at the Stop One Food Mart & Tobacco Shop on North Miami Boulevard in Durham. She had a choice of claiming her prize as a $50,000 annuity over 20 years or as a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum and after the required tax withholdings took home $415,503.
The Millionaire 7’s game began in April 2014 with 10 top prizes of $1 million. Jones’ win means all 10 have been claimed so the lottery will begin ending the game.
Ticket sales from games like Millionaire 7’s made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how more than $84 million in lottery funds has made a difference in Durham County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
