If you were in Columbia on Sunday and saw a man on a scooter celebrating on top of the Scuppernong River Bridge, you would have seen Roy McClure just after he won $150,000.

For McClure, a carpenter, Sunday began with a trip to the Eagle Mart on Scuppernong Drive to try his luck with $10 in lottery winnings from the day before. He bought two $5 tickets, but didn’t win a prize on either. As he was about to ride away, something told McClure to try one more time. So he went back inside the store and bought a $5 ticket for the $500 Cash game. The number he matched had the game’s top prize of $150,000 on it.

McClure confirmed the win at the store using a ticket scanner, called his wife to tell her the good news, and then headed home. “I stopped on the top of the bridge for a moment, and hollered,” he said.

After taxes were withheld, McClure received a check for $103,876. He said he planned to pay off his home loan and buy a vehicle, perhaps a used truck, and then save the rest.

“I’m just glad I won it, cause I can use it,” McClure said.

The $500 Cash game, which has the popular Back Scratch feature, began in December with 10 top prizes of $150,000. Three more remain to be claimed.
