For Glenda Blackwell of Leicester, an attempt to teach her husband a lesson turned into a $1 million lottery win.

Blackwell said she was irritated by her husband’s request to buy some Powerball tickets, so she decided to get a Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket for herself.

“I wanted to show him that luck doesn’t always hit,” Blackwell said.

When she scratched her ticket, she knew she wasn’t going to be able to prove her point.

“I had to eat my words,” Blackwell said. “But those are pretty good words to eat.”

She claimed her prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. Blackwell had the choice of taking a $1 million annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. She chose the lump sum and after federal and state tax withholdings received $415,503. She plans to use the money to get a new home.

Blackwell bought the $10 ticket at the Suttles Quik Mart on New Found Road in Asheville.

Carolina Millions launched earlier this month with eight top prizes of $1 million. Seven top prizes remain.

Ticket sales from games like Carolina Millions made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million dollars for the state last year.
