A trip to the grocery store to get something for dinner turned into a $100,000 lottery win for Michelle Walker of Apex.
Walker was shopping Wednesday at Food Lion on Williams Street in Apex, when she decided to get a $4,000,000 Platinum Payout ticket. When she scratched the ticket at the store she realized she won $100,000.
“I started screaming, ‘What, What?’” Walker said. “I went around the store with my hands in the air.”
Walker dropped the groceries off at her daughter’s home, and 45 minutes later claimed her prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $69,256. She says she’ll use the money to help cover the cost of her new beach house.
As for cooking her dinner? “We’ll see if I get around to it,” Walker said. “Right now I’m on cloud nine.”
This wasn’t Walker’s only luck of the day. Right before she bought the $20 scratch-off ticket, she got a call saying she had just won a handmade quilt.
$4,000,000 Platinum Payout launched in September with three top prizes of $4 million, five $1 million prizes, and 12 $100,000 prizes. All top prizes, four $1 million prizes, and ten $100,000 prizes remain.
Ticket sales from games like $4,000,000 Platinum Payout made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year.
