On Thursday, Johnston County became home to another $1 million Mega Millions winner, after Geoffrey Luckey of Smithfield claimed the prize he won in Tuesday’s drawing at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
This is the second big Mega Millions win for the county in a week.
Luckey beat odds of 1 in 18.5 million to win the $1 million prize. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he received $692,142.
He bought the $1 Quick Pick ticket at the Cruizers on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh. It matched all five white balls drawn to win $1 million.
The first win came Monday when Elmer Stephens of Clayton claimed his $1 million Mega Millions prize from Friday’s drawing.
The next Mega Millions drawing is Friday. The jackpot is $76 million with an estimated lump sum of $45 million.
Ticket sales from games like Mega Millions made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Johnston County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
