Norman Rogers of Weaverville is the first player to claim one of two winning tickets for a $435,216 Cash 5 jackpot.
Rogers beat the odds of 1 in 749,398 to match all five numbers in the Dec. 21 drawing. He’ll split the jackpot and get $217,608.
He claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $150,693.
He bought the $1 Quick Pick ticket at the Handy Mart on North Main Street in Weaverville.
The second winning Cash 5 ticket was sold at the Murphy Express on North Howe Street in Southport.
Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Buncombe County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
