For Andreas Cabral of Raleigh, a coffee run turned into a $100,000 lottery win after he bought a Ruby Red 7’s ticket.
Cabral, a software salesman, was at the Sheetz on Convenience Lane in Cary when he decided to get the $20 ticket.
“I haven’t played the lottery in a long time,” Cabral said. “But for some reason I decided to.”
When he scratched the ticket in his car, he couldn’t believe his good luck.
“The zeros didn’t stop,” Cabral said. “I just froze. I kept staring at it looking for the numbers to change.”
The numbers didn’t change, and Cabral claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings he received $69,256. He plans to use some of the money to go on a vacation to Puerto Rico.
Ruby Red 7’s launched this month with three top prizes of $4 million, four prizes of $1 million, and eight prizes of $100,000. All $4 million prizes, three $1 million prizes, and six $100,000 prizes remain.
Ticket sales from games like Ruby Red 7’s made it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars for the state last year. For details on how almost $331 million in lottery funds has made a difference in Wake County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
