Andrew Boris of Pineville will soon be driving a new set of wheels, thanks to winning a Cash 5 jackpot.
“This will be my first new car,” Boris said. “I’m going to go to the lot and see what peaks my fancy. I’ll probably get a SUV.”
Boris, a Navy veteran, was one of three people to beat the odds of 1 in 749,398 in Thursday’s drawing to win the $1,065,423 Cash 5 jackpot.
He stopped by four stores to get four different Quick Pick tickets for the drawing. The winning ticket ended up coming from the Kangaroo Express on South Polk Street in Pineville.
When Boris found out the ticket matched all five numbers, he couldn’t believe his eyes.
“I called my parents to have them check the numbers,” Boris said. “I wanted to make sure I wasn’t seeing things.”
Boris claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh, receiving a third of the jackpot, $355,141. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $246,826.
Lisa Williard of Harmony was one of the other players to win the jackpot. This is her second time winning a Cash 5 jackpot. She bought her ticket at Barker’s Log Cabin Grocery Too on Harmony Highway in Harmony.
The final winning Cash 5 ticket was sold at Stanleyville Grocery on North Patterson Avenue in Winston-Salem. Winners have 180 days to claim their prize.
Ticket sales from games like Cash 5 made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Mecklenburg County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
