Bridgette Tran from Charlotte couldn’t believe her eyes when she won $150,000 playing Holiday Riches and had to get a second opinion from someone she trusted.
“When I looked at the ticket and realized I won, I said to myself, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me,’ said Tran. “I had to call my dad to make sure I wasn’t reading the ticket wrong.”
The win still didn’t seem real Thursday when Tran arrived at lottery headquarters to claim her prize.
“It still hasn’t hit me yet,” said Tran. “But I told myself that if I ever won the lottery, I would donate at least 10 percent to a charity of my dad’s choice. So I know I will do that.”
She bought the $5 ticket at The Pop Shoppe on Old Pineville Road in Charlotte. After the required state and federal tax withholdings, she took home $104,253.
Tran is the second player to win the top $150,000 prize since the game launched in November. One top prize remains.
Ticket sales from games like Holiday Riches made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how more than $352 million in lottery funds has made a difference in Mecklenburg County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
