George Meeks II of Gastonia said he will finally be able to get some sleep after he claimed a $750,000 lottery prize.
“I’ve been up all weekend,” Meeks said. “I haven’t been able to sleep at all.”
The mill supervisor bought a Jumbo Bucks ticket on Saturday when he stopped to get gas at the Raceway on South York Road in Gastonia.
When he scratched the ticket, he couldn’t believe what he saw.
“I thought I only won $750 at first,” Meeks said. “It took me a while to realize I won $750,000. I was very excited once I figured it out.”
Meeks claimed his prize first thing Monday morning at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $521,260. He plans to use the money to take care of his family.
The $10 game launched in August 2015. One $750,000 top prize remains.
Ticket sales from games like Jumbo Bucks made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
