Asuncion Campos of Raleigh is celebrating with a trip to New York City after he won a $100,000 lottery prize with the help of his lucky number.
Campos, an equipment operator for the city of Raleigh, was on his way to work when he stopped by the BP on Spring Forest Road and got a 10th Anniversary Millions scratch-off ticket.
“Five is my lucky number,” Campos said.
So he asked for the fifth ticket in the lottery display case. When he scratched the $10 ticket, he couldn’t believe what he saw.
“I was surprised,” Campos said. “I always hoped that one day I was going to hit the big number, and I did.”
Campos claimed his prize Wednesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $69,504. He plans to use some of the money to take a trip to New York with his friends, and then invest the rest.
10th Anniversary Millions launched in April 2016 with four top prizes of $1 million and six prizes of $100,000. One $1 million prize and one $100,000 prize remain to be claimed.
Ticket sales from games like 10th Anniversary Millions made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Wake County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
