After 20 years of building homes for other people, Steven Hawkins of Thomasville will finally be able to get his dream home thanks to a $100,000 lottery win.
“I’m not sure what type of home it will be yet, but it’s going to be in the country,” Hawkins said. “That’s where I grew up.”
Hawkins said he didn’t plan to buy a $5 Mega Bucks ticket when he stopped by the Raceway on South Main Street in High Point.
“I was just getting gas for my sister-in-law,” Hawkins said. “After I paid, I was about to walk out, but turned around and asked for the ticket.”
That decision turned out to be a lucky one.
Hawkins claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $69,502.
Ticket sales from games like Mega Bucks made it possible for the lottery to raise more than $634 million for the state last year. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Davidson County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
