Gary Turner of Kinston said he couldn’t contain his excitement after he won $200,000 playing the Jeep scratch-off game.
“It felt great,” Turner said. “I did a little hollerin.”
Turner stopped at the Piggly Wiggly on U.S. 258 North in Kinston Wednesday afternoon and decided to get the $5 scratch-off ticket.
“When I saw the ticket,” he said. “I thought, ‘I have a Jeep, so that’s the one I’m going to get.’”
When Turner realized he won, he told his wife and then drove straight to lottery headquarters in Raleigh to claim his prize. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $139,003. He plans to use some of the money to pay bills.
The N.C. Education Lottery and Jeep teamed up to create North Carolina’s first Jeep ticket. Besides a $200,000 top prize, players can enter their Jeep tickets into one of four second-chance drawings for a chance to win a Jeep Brand Vehicle. Each of the seven second-chance winners will choose between a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon, Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, and a Jeep Renegade Trailhawk.
So far, four players have won Jeeps in the past two drawings. The deadline for the third drawing is Thursday Aug. 31. One top prize remains in the scratch-off game.
Ticket sales from instant games like Jeep make it possible for the lottery to raise more than half a billion dollars a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in Lenoir County, click on the “For Education” section of the lottery’s website.
