Alice Garland, who has led the N.C. Education Lottery for the last seven years, has been elected to the Lottery Industry Hall of Fame.

Garland was one of five lottery professionals selected to join the Hall of Fame this year. The Lottery Industry Hall of Fame, founded in 2005, recognizes those who have done the most to promote excellence and integrity in the world lottery industry.

Garland’s selection resulted from her leadership in the area of responsible gaming and in the use of emerging technology to keep the games relevant to consumers. In the past 11 years the N.C. Education Lottery has raised $5.2 billion for education. The lottery now raises more than $600 million a year to support education in North Carolina.

"I know from a decade of working with Alice that her success as a leader begins with her principle of just doing the right thing." wrote Tom Shaheen, former executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery, in a nomination letter. “Responsible gaming distinguishes us from so many others in the gaming industry. It ensures we meet our mission in raising money for good causes while protecting the interests of those who play the lottery. It's what will make our industry sustainable."

Garland’s induction occurred Friday at a conference of the National Association of State and Provincial Lotteries in Portland, Oregon.
