For Marco Ferrer of Greensboro, a decision to get gas during his lunch break turned into a $200,000 lottery win.
The roofer’s good luck happened Wednesday afternoon when he stopped at the Circle K on Factory Shops Road in Morrisville and bought a $5 Strike It Rich! scratch-off ticket.
“I wasn’t going to get this ticket,” Ferrer said. “But then I was like, ‘Why not?’ I scratched off the ‘30’ and then saw the ‘30’ at the top of the card and couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘Is this true? That’s a lot of zeros.’”
Ferrer claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $141,003. He plans to use the money to buy a new house.
Strike It Rich! launched in December with four top prizes of $200,000. One top prize remains.
Ticket sales from games like Strike It Rich make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $600 million dollars a year for education.
