Robert Buff of Mount Holly said he can’t wait to get some new recliners after he won a $202,442 Cash 5 jackpot.
“My wife and I have needed new recliners for a long time,” Buff said. “We’ll get ones where we don’t sink down so much. We’ll also do some repairs around the house.”
Buff’s good fortune happened Friday when he stopped by Lee’s Quick Stop on North Main Street in Mount Holly and bought two Quick Pick Cash 5 tickets.
“I always check the tickets the next morning,” Buff said. “I didn’t win anything on the first ticket. But then on the second ticket I saw that I’d matched three numbers. I had to look again and I thought, ‘Wow! I hit all five.’”
He immediately went to tell his wife who was still asleep.
“I told her I had a surprise for her,” Buff said. “She looked at me and asked, ‘Did you go to Dunkin’ Donuts?’ I told her, ‘No. This is bigger than doughnuts.’”
Buff claimed the prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $142,724.
Cash 5 is a statewide draw game that gives players the chance to win a jackpot every single night. Tickets cost $1 and players can buy tickets at most lottery retailers or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com.
Ticket sales from draw games make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds have made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
