After claiming a $60 prize Monday morning, Richard Maynard of Raleigh decided to try his luck again. That decision turned into a $1 million prize.
Maynard’s good fortune happened when he stopped at the Quality Mart on Langston Pond Drive in Cary to claim his $60 in winnings. On his way out, he picked up two $10,000,000 Colossal Cash tickets.
When Maynard saw the $1 million prize, he said the turn of events wasn’t a big surprise. “I’ve always imagined winning,” he said.
A building materials salesperson for over four decades, Maynard said the prize will help make some dreams come true. “I never get a new truck,” Maynard said. “I always bought a used one. This might be the time I get a new one though.”
Maynard said the prize will also help with his retirement plans. “I’ve always wanted to move to the beach when I retire, now maybe a nice boat will be in order.”
Maynard claimed the prize Monday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. He had the choice of taking an annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $424,509.
The $30 ticket launched in August 2018 with 4 top prizes of $10 million and 16 $1 million prizes. Three $10 million prizes and 10 $1 million prizes remain.
Ticket sales from games like $10,000,000 Colossal Cash make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $650 million a year for education.
