Joseph DeHart of Robbinsville in Graham County said it was a blessing to win a $1 million Powerball prize.
DeHart’s $2 ticket matched the numbers on all five white balls in the Jan. 25 Powerball drawing, beating odds of 11.7 million. After required state and federal tax withholdings, he took home $707,500
“Blessed,” said DeHart on Friday as he and his wife claimed the prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. “We’re blessed.”
DeHart bought his lucky ticket at the Catamount Travel Center in Whittier.
The jackpot for Wednesday’s Powerball drawing is $70 million or $50.7 million cash.
Ticket sales from draw games like Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $700 million a year for education. For details on how lottery funds made a difference in all of North Carolina’s 100 counties last year, click on the “Impact” section of the lottery’s website.
