Kenneth Baker Jr. of Charlotte was shocked to learn his Quick Pick ticket won him a $150,000 Powerball prize.

“I was surprised!” he said. “I actually had to have my wife look at the email to make sure that I was seeing it correctly.”

The $3 Power Play ticket matched numbers on four of the white balls and the Powerball in the May 1 drawing to win Baker $50,000. His prize tripled to $150,000 when the 3X multiplier was drawn.

Baker purchased his ticket through Online Play on the lottery’s website.

He claimed his prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and took home $106,126 after required federal and state tax withholdings.

“We’re just going to put it in savings and see what we need to do from there,” he said.

No one won Saturday’s Powerball jackpot. The jackpot stands at $168 million as an annuity or $117 million cash for Wednesday’s drawing. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

Players can buy Powerball tickets through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com, with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App, or at any lottery retail location.

Draw games such as Powerball make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $725 million a year for education. For details on how $60.5 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Mecklenburg County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
