James Britt of Hope Mills tried his luck playing Powerball and won a $100,000 prize.
Britt’s $3 Power Play ticket, purchased at the Walmart on Legion Road in Hope Mills, matched four white balls and the Powerball in the Sept. 6 drawing to win $50,000. That prize doubled to $100,000 when the 2X multiplier was drawn. The odds of matching four white balls and the Powerball in a drawing are 1 in 913,129.
He claimed his prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,011.
The current Powerball jackpot for Saturday’s drawing is $20 million, or $14.2 million cash. The odds of winning a jackpot are 1 in 292 million.
Ticket sales from draw games like Powerball help make it possible for the lottery to raise more than $900 million a year for education. For details on how $21.9 million raised by the lottery made a difference in Cumberland County in 2020, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
