Matthew Powell of Gaffney, S.C. tried his luck on a $20 scratch-off and won a $100,000 prize.
Powell bought his lucky 100X The Cash ticket from QSC Food Mart on McAdenville Road in Lowell in Gaston County. He claimed his prize Tuesday and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $71,256.
The 100X The Cash game debuted in December with five $2 million prizes and 10 $100,000 prizes. Three $2 million top prizes and six $100,000 prizes remain to be claimed.
Ticket sales from scratch-offs make it possible for the lottery to raise $2.5 million a day on average for education.
