When Kemisha Vandunk of Spring Lake arrived in Raleigh to claim her lottery winnings, she had no idea she just won a $133,315 Cash 5 jackpot.
“When we got here and they told us how much it was, I was overjoyed,” she said. “I thought I won maybe $1,000.”
Vandunk said her Monday morning started in a typical way when she went to the Short Stop on Anderson Ponds Drive in Spring Lake to buy a coffee and a $1 Quick Pick ticket.
“It was just like any normal day and then boom,” Vandunk laughed.
She split Monday’s $266,630 Cash 5 jackpot with a winning ticket from Online Play in Fairview. The odds of matching numbers on all five balls playing Cash 5 are 1 in 962,598.
“I’ve got the shakes,” Vandunk said. “I am stoked right now.”
She arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday to collect her prize and, after required state and federal tax withholdings, took home $95,321.
Vandunk said she will put some of her winnings toward retirement and use some for her family’s trucking business.
“This will definitely help,” she said.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Wednesday’s Cash 5 jackpot stands at $110,000.
