William Nettles of Fuquay-Varina plans to help take care of his granddaughters after he won a $110,000 Cash 5 jackpot.
“Those girls mean the world to me,” he said.
Nettles bought his $1 Quick Pick ticket for the July 12 drawing from Whiteys Country Store on Christian Light Road in Fuquay-Varina. He stopped at the store before driving down to Florida to visit family and go fishing.
“It was exuberance,” Nettles recalled when asked how he felt when he won. “I was sitting in my car right in front of the beach when I checked the numbers.”
Nettles said he called his dad first and then his best friend to tell them his big news.
“My dad told me, ‘It looks like you got it son,’” Nettles said.
He claimed his prize at lottery headquarters Monday in Raleigh and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $78,651.
“I’ve been through a lot lately but I believe good things do happen to good people,” he said.
In addition to helping his grandchildren, Nettles plans to buy a generator to power his house.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Monday’s jackpot is $120,000.
