Orange County woman bags $226,671 jackpot win

Patricia Oliver of Chapel Hill took a chance on a $1 Cash 5 ticket on Sunday and won a $226,671 jackpot.

Oliver bought her lucky ticket using Online Play. Her ticket matched all five numbers in the drawing to win the jackpot. The odds of matching numbers on all five balls are 1 in 962,598.

She claimed her prize at lottery headquarters Thursday and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $162,070.

Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying their tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Friday’s jackpot is $120,000.

Hi Sandra, we love it when popular numbers are drawn and players win lots of money. However, we have strict rules in place to ensure that every set of numbers, regardless of popularity, has exactly the same chance of being drawn in every drawing. Regardless of past draw results, there is always a 1 in 1,000 chance that one of the 10 "quads" will be drawn from among the 10,000 possible winning combinations.

NCEL would get more play for Cash 5 if you started the jackpot at $500,000 or even better, $1,000,000

Hi, Contrell! At this time, we don't have any set plans for adding Double Play or EZ Match to Cash 5, as our site's functionality does not currently support those features. That said, we're always looking to improve the player experience and the folks in charge of these decisions read comments on our blogs, so the future is full of possibilities!
