Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots top $1.5 billion combined

Powerball and Mega Millions players in North Carolina will have opportunities over the next two days to win jackpots totaling $1.52 billion.

A Powerball winner tonight would have the choice of taking home the $645 million jackpot as an annuity or $307.3 million in cash.

A Mega Millions winner on Tuesday would have the choice of taking home the $875 million jackpot as an annuity or $413.5 million in cash. If won, the $875 million jackpot would represent the sixth largest in Mega Millions history and 10th largest in U.S. history.

While North Carolinians keep trying for the jackpot, others big wins occurred in both games recently. One lucky ticket in North Carolina matched four white balls and the red Powerball in Saturday’s drawing to win $50,000. The win occurred:

  • At Jeff’s Golden Gate Exxon on Golden Gate Drive in Greensboro

One ticket in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing matched four of the five white balls and the yellow Mega Ball to win $10,000. The win occurred:

  • At the Sheetz on Fayetteville Road in Raleigh

Players can buy Mega Millions and Powerball tickets at any lottery retail location or through Online Play on the lottery’s website, www.nclottery.com, or with the NC Lottery Official Mobile App.

The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302 million. The odds of winning a Powerball jackpot are 1 in 292 million.

"Why isn't NC lowering our taxes with the lottery winfall and now the sports betting winfall." Hey Eugene - Under the last tax law that the legislature passed, the income tax rate remained at 4.99% for tax year 2022 and at 4.75% for tax year 2023. The income tax rate lowers from 4.6% to 4.5% in tax year 2024, from 4.5% to 4.25% in tax year 2025, from 4.25% to 3.99% in tax year 2026. From 4.99% to 3.99% is a 20% reduction in the NC State Income Tax rate. 20%!!

The total Powerball payout for 3/18/2024 was $198,315.00 according to the NCEL website. I'm sure millions of dollars in tickets were sold. Why isn't NC lowering our taxes with the lottery winfall and now the sports betting winfall.
